Myths Busted: Plastic Surgery
Using Science To Dispel Misconceptions About Cosmetic Procedures
Plastic surgery is a field of medicine that employs surgical procedures to improve both the aesthetic appeal and functionality of the body. Despite its therapeutic purposes, it often faces misconceptions or stigma, primarily due to its emphasis on cosmetic enhancements.
Our board-certified experts aim to debunk prevalent plastic surgery myths by offering scientifically sound information and fostering a better understanding of what actually happens in the operating room.
Myth: Plastic Surgeons Still Use Leeches
While it may sound medieval, the use of leeches in medical procedures is not a relic of the past but a surprisingly modern technique. Leeches can be used to improve blood flow in reattached tissues, assisting in the healing process. However, this practice is reserved for unique cases and specific procedures, including those that address abscesses, glaucoma, thrombosis and some blood circulation disorders.
“Patients don’t need to be worried about us using leeches because we are not performing the type of procedures that may require a leech. We don’t use sterile maggots, either.”
-Jeffrey Donaldson, MD
Myth: Liposuction Is A Weight Loss Solution
Liposuction is often misconceived as a weight loss solution, but its primary purpose is to refine and contour specific areas of the body. This procedure is best suited for removing localized fat deposits that are resistant to diet and exercise, rather than serving as a method for substantial weight loss.
Patients should approach liposuction as a means to enhance their body’s natural silhouette — not as a massive weight loss solution.
Myth: Breast Implants Will Make You Float
No, breast implants will not cause a person to float. Breast implants — whether saline or silicone — are designed to mimic the natural density of breast tissue. They do not possess buoyant properties that would cause significant flotation in water.
Myth: Plastic Surgery Is Only For Looks
Plastic surgery is not solely an extension of vanity; it plays a critical role in reconstructive procedures that improve patients’ quality of life. These world-class interventions are vital for patients seeking to enhance both their physical and psychological well-being.
For instance, reconstructive procedures following trauma, cancer or congenital deformities help restore function and appearance. Breast reduction surgery and tummy tuck surgery can relieve back pain, while labiaplasty and body lift surgery offer additional comfort and hygienic benefits.
Myth: You Lose Nipple Sensation After Breast Implant Surgery
While changes in nipple sensitivity and sensation can occur, they are typically temporary. Advances in surgical techniques have significantly reduced the risk of long-lasting sensory changes, ensuring that most patients retain or eventually regain normal sensation.
Myth: Labiaplasty Decreases Sexual Sensation
Labiaplasty is carefully performed to preserve and enhance functionality and sensation. No nerves are removed or damaged through the process. Many of our patients report increased comfort and confidence post-surgery, which can positively impact their sexual wellness and overall well-being.
Myth: Fat Won’t Come Back After Liposuction
Liposuction removes fat cells from targeted areas permanently; however, it does not prevent the remaining fat cells from expanding if a patient gains weight. Maintaining a stable weight through a balanced diet and regular exercise is essential for long-lasting results.
Myth: You Can’t Get Pregnant After A Tummy Tuck
A tummy tuck — or abdominoplasty — does not affect a woman’s ability to conceive or have a healthy pregnancy. This procedure involves the removal of excess skin and fat and the tightening of abdominal muscles, but it does not interfere with reproductive organs.
That said, women are most often advised to complete their families before undergoing a tummy tuck for optimal, enduring results.
Myth: You Can’t Breastfeed After Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation typically does not impede a woman’s ability to breastfeed. Modern surgical techniques are designed to preserve the milk ducts and nerves involved in lactation. However, discussing breastfeeding plans with a board-certified plastic surgeon before surgery is crucial to tailor the approach for the best possible outcomes should the patient wish to breastfeed in the future.
Myth: If I Get Lipo In One Area, I’ll Gain More Fat In Another Area
While it is true that liposuction permanently removes fat cells from the targeted area, it does not prevent weight gain. Any subsequent weight gain will be distributed proportionally across the body, not specifically in untreated areas.
Myth: Breast Implants Need Replaced Every 10 Years
While it is commonly believed that breast implants need to be replaced every 10 years, this is not necessarily the case. Implants may last longer without issues, and routine replacement is not required unless complications arise or the patient desires a breast augmentation revision.
Regular follow-ups and communication with your surgeon ensure the longevity and safety of the implants.
